Newcastle Museum has a long and rich history, starting with its founding in 1988 as a significant Bicentennial project. Initially developed by a consortium of interested parties, including the Institution of Engineers and Supernova Inc., the idea of a regional museum in Newcastle gained traction in the 1980s. Though the original location selected was the Honeysuckle Railway Workshops, moves to acquire the site fell through. However, this setback didn’t stop the museum’s progress. The team turned their sights to the former Castlemaine Brewery in Hunter Street, Newcastle West, which they acquired and restored to its former glory. And on 4 August 2011, Newcastle Museum officially opened its doors in its new home. Today, it is a testament to the incredible passion and dedication of those who brought the idea to life.

The Castlemaine Brewery in Newcastle was home to the Museum from 1988 until 2008. It was a beloved and cherished building, but it eventually had to make way for constructing the new Museum in Honeysuckle. After 20 years of operation, the Castlemaine Brewery Museum has become an icon in the city, attracting locals and tourists alike. Its closure was a bittersweet moment, but it marked a new chapter in the history of Newcastle’s growing cultural scene.
