The waves crashing against the shores of Bar-Dixon Park-Merewether Beach draw in visitors from far and wide. This 1.3 km long beach, with its exposed southeast-facing coast and three surf lifesaving clubs, is a hotspot for beachgoers in Newcastle. Divided into three sections by the surf clubs, each has its unique charm. In the north is Bar Beach, where the Cooks Hill SLSC closely monitors swimmers and surfers alike. As for Dixon Park beach in the centre, the Dixon Park SLSC is perched on 20-meter high slopes and is backed by a park and oval. And let’s not forget the southern Merewether Beach, with its stunning views of the rocky shoreline that extends for 1.5 km. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or just need a break from the daily grind, Bar-Dixon Park-Merewether Beach offers something for everyone.

Surrounded by established suburbs, the beach is easily accessible by both road and bus, with the added convenience of large car parks located adjacent to the three surf clubs. Two beautiful rock pools can also be found on the rock platform at Merewether, perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot summer day. The beach itself is characterised by waves averaging 1.6m, bounded by 50m high cliffs and comprehensive rock platforms. While rocks and reefs are present in the surf at either end and along the beach, they only add to the beauty of the surroundings. The beach also boasts a bar that is usually cut by 4-5 beach rips with permanent rips at either end, the northern at Cooks Hill being the more prominent. Moreover, the first surf carnival in the area was held on Merewether Beach in March, cementing its place as an iconic destination for beach lovers in the Newcastle area.

What to do at Merewether Beach

Swimming at this beach may seem tempting, but be aware of the potential danger caused by beach and headland rips. With numerous rescues carried out each year by the three surf clubs, it is crucial to stay between the flags and avoid the rip currents. However, if you are still unsure about swimming, the rock pool is an excellent option for a more secure experience. On the other hand, for those who are more inclined towards surfing, this beach is a hot spot for international competitions and offers excellent beach breaks. When the swell is moderate, the outer bar is the perfect spot, and during more giant waves, The Ladies Reef at Merewether produces impressive rights up to 3m. And for those who enjoy fishing, this beach has permanent gutters running out past the rocks, with several good ones along the beach – plenty of options for a great day out.
