Bogey Hole

About Bogey Hole

Located on the vibrant Newcastle coastline, the Bogey Hole ocean pool is a unique attraction every Instagrammer should experience. This historical site dates back to 1819 and was created by convicts for the personal use of Major James Morisset. Today, visitors can marvel at the impressive hand-hewn pool that sits within the wave-cut rock platform. Whether you visit during a moment of calm or a full flight, the natural beauty of this spot makes it a must-see destination for anyone looking to soak up the scenery. Take a moment to enjoy the calm waters, feel the ocean breeze, and capture some unforgettable snaps to remember your visit.

The Bogey Hole is a true Newcastle icon with a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Originally known as the ‘Commandant’s Baths’, this picturesque natural pool was once used exclusively by the military elite. However, over time it became a beloved spot for locals and visitors, taking on the more colloquial name of ‘Bogey Hole’. This name derives from the Dharawal word for ‘to bathe’, a nod to the many swimmers who have enjoyed the clear, refreshing waters over the years. Set against the stunning sandstone cliffs of Shepherds Hill, The Bogey Hole is a must-see for history buffs and beachgoers alike.

What to do at Bogey Hole

Swimming in the Newcastle Bogey Hole is an unconventional experience. There’s just something about the way the waves crash across the pool, reminding you that you’re in the open ocean, that makes it unforgettable. The size and unique shape of the swimming hole give you the feeling of being in a luxurious private pool, but the constant onslaught of waves is a humbling and thrilling reminder of your position in the world. The bottom of the pool is remarkably smooth, almost like slate, and the water is consistently fresh and clean due to the constant flow of the waves in and out. And even though I have grown increasingly safety-conscious over the years, I still find myself drawn to the unique nature of the Bogey Hole, where the locals can be seen braving the waves along the side of the seawall. Once you’ve dipped into this famous landmark, you’ll be hooked on its surreal, unforgettable allure.

As if the Newcastle Bogey Hole weren’t already the perfect spot to cool off on a hot summer’s day, the breathtaking views only add to the charm of this unique swimming hole. From one direction, you can see all the way to Port Stephens, while the other direction offers a stunning view of Merewether Beach. It’s hard to imagine a more beautiful place to take a dip, where you can soak in the scenery while you cool down. Once you’ve had your fill of swimming, don’t forget to venture up the stairs and into King Edward Park. Here, you can bask in the warm sun on the grass while enjoying a leisurely picnic. It’s the perfect way to round out a day of relaxation and rejuvenation.
